On 15th August, 21 of our members raced The Hybrid Games at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle. It's a hybrid fitness competition in the same category as Hyrox, mixing running with functional stations across a full race format. We took a wave of our own and went out as the first group of the day. Not one person had done a dedicated block of prep for it.

Our members turned up on the back of the same weekly sessions they always do, and they raced well.
Strength work, engine work and conditioning are already in the programme, so a hybrid race isn't a departure from the training, it's just the training under a clock with a crowd watching.

Asked afterwards why he bothered competing at all, one member put it plainly: as men, sometimes we need to be tested. That's most of it. The Hybrid Games runs again next year, and while we don't host it or have any hand in organising it, we'll have a wave there. If you want to be in it, the work starts now rather than twelve weeks out.
